Cultures are about 2 weeks old when they arrive, so they are already actively producing flies and ready to use immediately. The culture will continue to produce flies for 2-3 weeks after arriving. We tend to toss our cultures after the 30 day mark to reduce the growth of mites and keep odors down. Culture start dates are marked on every cup.

Melanogaster fruit flies are the best option for raising jumpers slings, and they are the main fruit fly type used to raise our own jumpers here at Super Spoods. For larger jumper species like Phidippus, the flies are excellent for slings leaving the nest all the way up to juveniles. The juveniles will need a lot more flies per spider to be satiated, naturally.

Our fruit flies are flightless, but not wingless. We have tried the wingless variety and found them to be less active in the spider enclosures and slower to reproduce. The fruit flies are able to hop and glide a bit, but the mechanism that controlls their wings is not attached correctly. 

Cultures do best when stored at 76-77 degrees fahrenheit. Storing your culture at cooler temps will cause production to slow. Try not to remove EVERY fly from the cup, so it can continue producing for the full life of the culture. Flies may appear lacking or asleep when they arrive if temps are cold. We time the making of our cultures so that they arrive with plenty of larvae and pupae ready to eclose (aka hatch) into flies.

All cultures are sent via USPS Priority mail (1-3 day shipping times). We ship every other Monday, so cultures arrive every 2 weeks. Please ensure someone will be home to bring your flies inside. You can also have the package directed to your closest USPS facility for pickup if you will not be home to receive it during the day. If that is an option that works for you, please be sure to correct the mailing address when you order.
